Overdrive is an action thriller directed by Antonio Negret. The story centers on brothers Andrew (Eastwood) and Garret (Thorp), international car thieves that target high-end classics. Working in France they steal a car from the wrong person and end up owing a local mobster. The Foster brothers must now rob from a rival mob boss to make things even. Their mark, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
Overdrive crams as many subplots and ideas from other heist films. So many that the movie lacks any originality. That along with a mediocre script, bad acting and bad directions makes this film tiresome. Overdrive’s cast is filled with too many characters and actors that can’t carry the film. Most of the actors are only worthy to be secondary or background characters. Scott Eastwood and Ana de Armas have made better performances so I blame the script on making them look worse. As for the main attraction, the action is tame. The chase sequences even though sometimes executed nicely are rather boring. The budget is clearly non-existent to create good looking effects during the action scenes and leads to creating some not so thrilling stunts. The best part of the film is that it indeed shows off some beautiful classic cars and some of the location shots are pretty.
Overdrive lacks in about everything you could want in a movie except it has some very nice cars. The script is so bad that it’s hard to stay entertained with only boring action scenes. Overdrive is a poor imitation of other car heist films. Stay away from this B-movie unless you like to waste time watching some pretty cars and garbage.
