Oshiete! Galko-chan, is a seinen anime that is a short-form perverted comedy. This series is about the daily lives of Galko, Otako, and Ojō. The three high school girls are stereotypes of different girls who also happen to be very good friends. Each episode, the girls banter back and forth about women problems that aren’t for public conversations.
I had no idea what the show was about except that it had good reviews. I have seen short-form anime before and they seem to work for non-sensical comedies. Right off the bat, the intro has a woman asking about women’s nipples. For the rest of the series that’s what is to be expected. A show pretending to be about girl talk and how it’s normal to talk about things like femine hygiene. In reality, it just comes off as super creepy because of the culmination of cutesy artwork, music, and topics at hand. Don’t get me wrong there are brief moments that remind me of Azumanga Daioh and Saiki Kusuo no Sai-nan. There is comedy in it, but there is also crude humor mixed with the creepiness that these are high school girls talking about girl issues aimed at a target audience for older men. It being only 7 minutes an episode is hard alone to put something together worthwhile. It is what it is, a perverted comedy with more emphasis on perverted. Not that it can’t be done right, just take a look at Big Mouth. Big Mouth has similar ideas yet doesn’t make you feel like a voyeur. Rather it reminds you of how much it sucked to be a confused tweenager. The artwork and animation itself was a bit subpar. The artwork looked a bit dated for no purpose while characters in the background are stiff and don’t move much.
Aside from some comedic moments, the rest of the series is filled with mediocrity. No story, subpar artwork, and overall creepiness factor. Give this a hard pass and check out Big Mouth.
