Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles, 2019. It depicts a future where synthetics (life like androids) are manufactured to do manual labor on off-world colonies. These synthetics are known as replicants. Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford, is an ex Blade Runner. Blade Runners are cops assigned to “retire” rogue replicants. Deckard is forced out of retirement to hunt down a group of fugitive replicants. During his investigation, Deckard meets Rachael played by Sean Young. Rachael turns out to be an advanced replicant who causes him to question his mortality.
More then thirty years have passed since the release of this film and Blade Runner is still an amazing film. Everything from the script, amazing visuals and practical effects, to the music and the beautiful cinematography. Deckard is an amazing character who by the end goes from hatred of replicants to questioning what distinguishes humans from replicants. The script has many metaphors throughout dealing with religious philosophical themes and questioning morality. The dark futuristic synth music provides a great mood that fits the tone of the film. The city itself becomes a character. The look of a futuristic LA that resembles a neo-Tokyo. Showing the contrast of beautiful technology with the dank and dark urban streets. I love film noir. The look just paints a picture over Deckard that gives off uncertainty in his actions. The music ties it all together. The only problem I have with the film, is that some scenes are dragged out for too long. Mainly those showing off the city. I get how examining the atmosphere is a part of the film, but some scenes needed to be cut back a bit. The main plot didn’t feel like there was enough meat to it so, the film felt short to me.
The overall themes and look of the film is what makes this film a classic. This is a smart sci-fi film that holds up to today. It’s a must watch regardless if you like sci-fi films. It is worth it just for the cinematography alone. If the sequel turns out to be in the same vein, I can just imagine how amazing it will be.
