Ore Monogatari!! story follows Takeo Goda, a beast of a student who has all the luck for the wrong gender. All the guys want to be his friend. It’s too bad all the girls run away or fall for his best friend, Makoto Sunakawa. His luck finally starts to go his way when he meets Rinko Yamato, a shy petite girl that he saves from a pervert on a train. They both fall for each other without suspecting their feelings for one another and that’s where this love story begins.
The first episode had me hooked, I loved the artwork and animation used in this series. The artwork assisted by the music was able to seamlessly switch from a serious tone into a silly one. The character designs were great and the backgrounds had a good amount of detail that most anime I have watched recently don’t have. The music is well done and suits the tone in this sometimes serious but often silly anime.
The story itself seems to have two plots. First it is has all the beats you would find in a romcom with the twist that they seem to be a complete mismatch for one another based on their appearance. The second plot revolves around the bromance between two best friends, Takeo and Makoto, that have grown up together. They are different in personality and looks, but it’s the way they care for each other that makes the story line interesting. The narrative is laid out pretty early on which allows time for the sub plots, so it never feels like it might interfere with the main story.
Character development in Ore Monogatari!! is great. The main trio get pretty fleshed out with flashbacks showing their back story as the series mostly revolves around them. Even the secondary characters in their limited time, are written well enough that you want to see more of them. The pacing is what helps as it doesn’t rush. They are able to show better development through the relationships that change and grow.
The only negative I can say about Ore Monogatari!! is that the tone of the series whether comedic or romantic, can at times get a bit over the top even for a romcom anime. Overall, the comedy is top-notch from the silly over the top movements, sound effects, to scenarios that occur and end up in disasters from misunderstandings. Ore Monogatari!! was entertaining and I can imagine I’d enjoy reading the manga. I just wish there had been more to watch, but that’s why these anime are created to lure you in and get you reading the manga. I definitely recommend Ore Monogatari!! a view if you are a fan of romantic comedies.
